Manually monitoring email? What’s up with that!?

With all of the technical sophistication we have, apparently business people still haven't figured out a way to automate the employee monitoring function. According to a new Proofpoint/Forrester Consulting survey, 41% of organizations companies with 20,000+ employees are *employing* people to monitor outbound email. Are you serious!? We've had automated employee monitoring systems for 10+ years that anyone in HR can manage and companies are paying people to do this ...

    Interesting breach making the headlines

Apparently Dave and Buster's (a favorite place of mine for food and fun) is one of the latest security breach "victims". This is a VERY good reason to NOT use debit cards (what consumer guru Clark Howard calls piece of trash fake Visas and fake Mastercards).I never use a debit card at a store or restaurant if it looks like the card scanner is connected directly to a computer. That's ...

    Forthcoming information security bailout?

A la the $300 billion housing bailout sponsored by the American Taxpayers (can you believe that!), maybe our government can one day bail out all of the irresponsible business managers that refuse to take information security seriously as well..??Man, can you imagine what $300 billion could do to improve security for the ignorant masses of business goons across this country!? I'm thinking firewalls for everyone. Maybe even new wireless APs ...

Why you need to protect your Blackberries – even in ‘secure’ locations

Here's an interesting story I stumbled across. Didn't seem to get much coverage elsewhere. Apparently people can't even visit our own White House without getting victimized. Man....that train of thought could go in SO many directions. Anyway, the lesson is to not leave your Blackberries, smartphones, and PDAs lying around in your purse, on your desk, or any other conspicuous place where they can be taken. No worries here though, I'm ...

C’mon Feds – what’s taking so long with the breach notification law?

You've probably gathered that I have little respect for the intent and abilities of our Imperial Federal Government here in the U.S. Our "leader" politicians stay busy developing gimmicks like the gas tax holiday instead of coming up with real solutions, arguing about "global warming", making the evil rich pay their fair share of taxes (yeah right!), and prying into Major League baseball steroid use. They have their hands in virtually ...

Small business owners take note – security affects you too!

In fact, the threats and vulnerabilities we're up against don't discriminate. Size doesn't matter. Here's a good read on this if you're trying to find some ammo to get management on your side and show that security affects all businesses - large and small. Here's another story about how credit card thieves are targeting small businesses.Oh, one more thing - one of the greatest bits of ammo is the Privacy Rights ...

ISP with no business continuity plan?

A couple of weeks ago, my home Internet service provider, SpeedFactory, went kaput. What used to be an awesome small ISP with good prices and tons of flexibility had let me down.I had no DSL, no email, nothing worked from home. Topping off the problem, no one was available to call...Their phone lines (even the fax) were inaccessible. Several days later, they amazingly re-surfaced and apologized for the outage. They ...

    Lost laptop worth $54 million?

Check out this news of Best Buy losing a laptop and, in turn, being sued for $54 million. Apparently there's sensitive information on it...Whew - steep price to pay for a laptop that just needed a new power button. Stakes will probably get higher once the number of people losing sensitive information is disclosed though. Maybe we'll see it on privacyrights.org's list of the finest. $54 million does seem a ...

Yesterday’s BlackBerry outage serves as a reminder …again

With the foremost messaging system having gone down twice now in less than a year, I'm beginning to wonder if RIM has anyone in their "business continuity" department... I'm guessing other systems/services were affected since this was a wireless disruption but it doesn't matter. A harsh reminder that one of your most critical applications is just a quick third-party outage away...and there's not a whole lot you can do about ...
