Is it possible to do more with less?

In this era of limited budgets and "wait and see" leadership you still have to do something to manage IT and information security. I've always had trouble understanding why people can't focus on the basics and solve these problems using solutions already at their disposal. I guess the marketing machine is just doing its job. Here's a good article about this very thing written by my colleague and publisher Steve Lasky ...

Looking for a tech job? Here’s what you have to do to stand out.

If you're currently looking for a job in IT with the current unemployment rate at 9.6% you know how difficult things can be. Deep down you likely know that you've got to do something to stand out above the noise so you can land that new position. But just what is it that you need to do? Do you network more, do you go back to school, do you get ...

Be careful what you ask for

Richard Carlson once said "Be careful what you ask for....sometimes your life is pretty darn good exactly the way it is." He went on to say "Think carefully through what it is you think you want, because you just might end up getting it, which is often more than you bargained for - more frustration, more grief, more travel, more responsibility, more conflict, more demands on your time, and so ...

Are your high-tech devices enslaving you?

I saw a recent Don't Sweat the Small Stuff calendar quote where Richard Carlson said:"It's important to see when your high-tech communication devices actually limit your freedom, enslaving you instead of providing new opportunities for growth." Wow, how true that is! Ever tried to not look at your emails or answer phone calls when you're out and about with your family or taking some time to yourself? Especially when you're ...

    Relentless incrementalism

I don't know who coined the term "relentless incrementalism" but it's very fitting when it comes to information security. Nor is it a product or a "compliant" status. It's ...

Have you told someone “no” lately? It’s good for you.

Jack Canfield had a great quote that relates well to information security (and the lack of time to manage it) as well as our overall careers. He said:"Success depends on getting good at saying no without feeling guilty. You cannot get ahead with your own goals if you are always saying yes to someone else's projects. You can only get ahead with your desired lifestyle if you are focused on ...

Are you idling or powering ahead?

In a previous post I wrote about how so many people waste so much time at work....the worst possible time in anyone's career to not be working all out.Well, here's a great quote by Thomas Jefferson that'll help motivate you to stay busy and resolve to get things done:"Determine never to be idle. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing."Don't let Facebook, eBay, ESPN, ...
