Inc.com had a piece on AI adoption/perception/strategy recently. I feel that it provides some interesting insight into what’s to come as it relates to dealing with employees working for – and against – the business…especially as it relates to sabotaging AI efforts. Lots of things for IT and security leaders and admins to pay attention to that I’ve summarized here:

    Challenges in Adoption

    • 72% of C-suite leaders reported significant challenges in transitioning to generative AI
    • 34% of executives described their generative AI rollout as a “massive disappointment”

    Employee Sabotage of AI Efforts

    • 31% of employees admitted sabotaging their company’s generative AI strategy
    • Among Millennials and Gen-Z employees, 41% reported engaging in some form of sabotage
      • 27% of employees engaged in low-level sabotage, such as entering company information into unauthorized generative AI tools
      • 16% were aware of AI security leaks but chose not to report them
      • 10% took more drastic actions, like tampering with performance metrics to make AI tools appear underperforming or intentionally generating low-quality outputs

    …Why they sabotaged AI:

    • 33% felt that AI diminished their value or creativity
    • 28% were concerned about AI taking their jobs, cited issues with low-quality AI tools and security concerns

Discrepancies in Perception of AI Strategy

    • 90% of executives stated their company has a generative AI strategy in place
    • Only 57% of employees believed the same

    …Perceived Ownership of AI Strategy:

    • 42% of employees believed IT leaders are responsible for AI-related decisions
    • Only 29% of C-suite executives agreed, while 67% believed that executives like themselves set the AI strategy
    • 42% of executives felt that this lack of clarity is “tearing their company apart” due to internal power struggles

The piece did cover some positive outlooks for AI including over 90% of employees and executives expressing optimism about their company’s approach to AI as well as 50% of both groups actively using AI for data analysis at work.

But, how’s this going to end up, especially the sabotage concerns?

Welcome to our new reality in IT and security. It’s best to pay attention…As with the World Wide web we first experienced three decades ago, this AI thing is not going away. I hope it ends well… 🤞🙏
